Ontario Provincial Police is stepping up patrols for ATV riders violating the law following a spate of incidents in which riders were killed or injured.

ATV operators can expect to be checked by officers with the Napanee, Loyalist, Kaladar and Picton OPP assisted by officers with the OPP East Region SAVE (Snowmobile, ATV, Vessel, Enforcement) Unit. The OPP will be increasing their ATV patrol and enforcement in these areas following recent fatalities.

In the OPP Eastern Region this year there has been a 200 per cent increase in fatalities and serious personal injury collisions involving ATVs. Of the six fatalities, five occurred on weekends and five occurred on highways.

* On May 9, a 45 year-old Madoc man lost control of his ATV on the Trans Canada Trail near Kaladar for an unknown reason. The man was thrown from the ATV and suffered fatal injuries. Speed and alcohol are believed to have been contributing factors.

* On May 31, a 37-year-old Flinton area man died while riding his ATV after he failed to negotiate a turn on Concession 5 in Addington Highlands Township. The man was thrown from his ATV into the Skootamatta River. Alcohol and speed are believed to be contributors in this fatality.

* On June 14, a 34-year-old Napanee man died after losing control of his ATV on Westplain Road. Alcohol is believed to have contributed to the collision.

* Most recently, in Prince Edward County on July 4, a 30- year-old female from St. Catharines died after losing control of her ATV and striking a tree on Hyuck's Point Road. A 36-year-old male passenger suffered injuries as a result. Alcohol, inexperience and improper use of equipment are believed to have contributed to this collision.

Provincial police issued this warning: "Officers will be ensuring riders are wearing proper helmets and that they are securely fastened. Speed limits will be strictly enforced and drivers will also be checked for alcohol consumption. Operators should be prepared to produce a valid ownership and insurance card for their ATV."

Point Petre, Nov. 8, Sunday after all the trucks left the Gull Pond beach area & went back to the main beach to have a bonfire, Pauly & his crew were cruising some of the back trails ... when low and behold, through the splashed windshield, Paul saw bright green and red ... 2 OPP bikes doing checks. Everything was OK with Pauly ... but anyway ... be wary.
